Team behind Netflix mega hit Adolescence set to remake one of Britain’s most terrifying dramas ever

Warp Films, the producer behind hit Netflix drama series Adolescence, has announced it has acquired the option to develop the critically acclaimed 1984 film Threads into a compelling new TV drama.

Renowned for its groundbreaking portrayal of a fictional nuclear apocalypse, the terrifying 1984 film offered a harrowing depiction of life in nuclear war-era Britain, set in Sheffield. This new adaptation will explore prescient issues of a new era of global instability through rich, character-driven storytelling.

The original film’s chilling account immersed viewers in the struggles of ordinary people facing unimaginable hardship. Sheffield-based Warp Films remains dedicated to producing authentic stories that highlight working-class experiences and is proud to reimagine this iconic story, finding new layers of meaning and elements of hope.

Warp Films, is set to deliver a fresh and impactful reinterpretation of one of the most influential films of the 20th century. With a strong tradition of bold, character-driven storytelling, Warp Films continues to push boundaries, as highlighted by the recent Netflix drama, Adolescence, upcoming BBC drama, Reunion and building on a legacy that includes the BAFTA-winning This Is England series.

The original film, written by Kestrel for a Knave, aka Kes, author Barry Hines and directed by The Bodyguard’s Mick Jackson was nominated for seven BAFTA Awards, winning four including Best Single Drama and was finally made available on BBC iPlayer last year after only being repeated a handful of times on TV following its original 1984 broadcast on BBC Two.
