As big screens are dismantled, World Cup-themed PR releases reduced and waistcoats packed away for 2 years, 5 live is reporting a surge in listeners.
The MediaCityUK station says that it’s had record podcast figures and more people than ever tuning in online.
Last month, there were more than 6m downloads of its podcasts, including 2m just for its World Cup Daily podcast. 5 live Breakfast, which has been co-hosted by Rachel Burden in Russia has seen online listening grow by 50%.
“We want to keep the momentum we have built in Russia going and it’s great to have some of the people who have made this World Cup so special back on air for new shows when the domestic season starts in August,” said Jonathan Wall, controller of BBC Radio 5 live.
“Kelly Cates and Robbie Savage will get new shows and World Cup 5 live favourites Chris Sutton, Alistair Bruce-Ball, Dion Dublin, Pat Nevin and Chris Waddle will be regular voices on the station throughout the new football season.
Cates who co-hosts the World Cup Daily podcast will become the regular presenter of 5 live’s sports coverage on Tuesdays from August.
Savage will be getting a weekly show, following the success of his World Cup Breakfast. His Premier League Breakfast will air every Friday from 8.30am throughout the football season.
