The University of Manchester has confirmed that it’s “currently managing a cyber security incident.”

It said that it had detected “unauthorised activity on its network” and immediately engaged in-house and external support to find out what data may have been affected.

The statement to the London Stock Exchange added that it was working with the Information Commissioner’s Office, the National Cyber Security Centre, and other regulatory bodies.

“A further update will be provided as and when appropriate,” it added.

Registrar, Secretary and Chief Operating Officer, Patrick Hackett told staff:

“We know this will cause concern to members of our community and we are very sorry for this.

“Our priority is to resolve this issue and provide information to those affected as soon as we are able to, and we are focusing all available resources.

“Please carry on as usual. You should be vigilant to any suspicious phishing email. […]

“We also advise staff not to download files from University systems in order to back them up.”
