Here, she shared how a recent week in her life went…

Monday

I begin my week dropping our two boys – one at breakfast club, the other at his friend’s house so they can walk to school together. I then head into Manchester to our city centre office. We’ve been in the building since September 2020, after deciding to buy in June 2020. It’s probably one of the most counter-intuitive things I’ve ever done, but my business partner, husband and our creative director, Darren, convinced me we should plough forwards despite the national lockdowns and pandemic. I’m glad we did.

I love Truth Towers; it’s a crowing glory to the hard work and dedication we’ve had for the last 16 years. It’s a Grade II listed building with heaps of character and feels a bit NYC with exposed brick and industrial interior. We start our day as a team with a workload session – what’s coming up, what’s on the schedule for this week and any agency discussions. Whilst I manage the business, I’m very much involved in every client we work with and still do a fair amount of account handling.

Both myself and Darren have always wanted to keep doing what we love; not directing from behind an office wall – we like leading by example and being part of the team. Today is a pretty exciting day – we’ve got two new people in my team: an apprentice and also a senior account manager. Much of the day is myself and the rest of the team showing the ropes and settling them both in. I’m looking forward to the new dynamic and helping them grow as part of the Truth team.

This afternoon myself and Darren head over to a studio round the corner to record a podcast. It’s a new idea from Vikas and Rachael Shah about partnership in business, aptly named ‘Better in Tandem’. We’re the very first guests on the show and they ask us how we manage to work together as husband and wife, and how we’ve managed to be successful in both our business and personal lives. The episode is due to launch in March so I’m looking forward to hearing it back. After the recording we head home – the boys are football crazy and both play for Bramhall North; Monday night the eldest trains and Darren is the coach, so we usually have to dash home a bit earlier and catch up later on.

Tuesday

We’ve just finished rolling out this year’s campaign for our higher education (HE) client UA92 and Tuesday is a demo at the campus ready for the UCAS event schedule. Today, I also chat to another HE provider for a lecture they’d like me to do with their students.

It’s a great way to give something back and inspire the next. The remainder of my day is consolidating insight from one of our Brand Lab sessions we ran last week for our global client, Sinclair. We’ve been running our Labs since 2019 and they’re an efficient but super effective way to generate ideas quickly using design sprint methodology. We run the Labs for Sinclair virtually, but it’s a great way to engage teams who are literally across the globe.

Wednesday

On Wednesday it’s our eldest son’s birthday, but despite the offer of an early finish and meal out – Man United are playing so that’s (apparently) more important to go to! Wednesday is a bit of a red theme as it turns out… I have a virtual coffee and catch up with the brand director at UA92, co-founded by the Class of 92 and Lancaster University.

We’ve been part of their journey since inception and it’s a brand we not only created but one we remain staunchly passionate about five years later. We then head over the road to see the team at Relentless to discuss the St.Michael’s development and brand direction.

It’s an exciting development for Manchester and we’re thrilled to be working with with the team. I head back home to pick up my youngest son and love using the drive time to listen to a podcast. I’m late to the party, but I’m loving Parenting Hell with Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicombe, which they recorded in lockdown. If you’re a parent and haven’t listened, and want a good laugh, I highly recommend it! It’s a draw for United, but kid #1 bags Luke Shaw’s shirt… not a bad birthday present I guess!

Thursday

Once a month I (try to) join a Be the Business Ambassador session, which runs on the third Thursday of each month. The session usually features a member or sometimes an MP might guest appear, so they are great for understanding other businesses and the challenges they might bring. It’s a programme I became involved in back in 2020 and was offered the opportunity to have a mentor.

It was something I’d never considered before, largely because I’ve been doing this job a long time, but also that I have always had Darren to discuss business with. However, Darren convinced me to get involved and accept the opportunity. I can honestly say it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done. I was paired with the sales transformation director at BAE Systems, so wholly unrelated to what we do, but it allowed me to have a critical friend and someone who could not only set me a deadline, but also push me beyond my comfort zone.

Will is now a great friend and he’s someone I can always call on, even though the official programme has ended. I think that when you are at the top, navigating your own business, it can be a lonely place. You don’t really have anyone to challenge you but you don’t have someone to reassure you either. The biggest thing Will gave me was confidence in my own abilities and business acumen. The imposter syndrome disappeared and I love what I do even more now!

Friday

Friday sees myself, Darren and our Account Director, Anna, back at UA92. It’s another Lab session, but this time around audience journeys and messaging. It’s a good, productive session with positive decisions made and actions to move forward with.

Back at the agency, Friday afternoon is admin day – issuing work in progresses and getting any last bits completed for the week… I also typically catch up with our PR managing partner, Lisa. She does a great job running the PR side of the business and having worked together in another agency prior to Truth, she’s a great friend too. Darren usually picks the boys up on Friday whilst I finish up and head home for family time before it all starts again…
