The long-awaited third part of Danny Boyle’s 28 … Later zombie trilogy has been confirmed by Sony Pictures.
The original, 28 Days Later, which starred a then unknown, Cillian Murphy was released in 2002.
28 Years Later is set to reunite Boyle and writer, Alex Garland, with a high profile cast including Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson & Ralph Fiennes.
No details of the plot have been revealed, but the 2002 film focused on a cycle courier (Murphy) who awoke from a coma to find out that a virus outbreak had turned the world into zombies.
Shot on an $8m budget, it grossed over $82m and led to the 2007 follow-up, 28 Weeks Later.
According to Deadline, Sony is making a trilogy of trilogies, with the first two being shot back-to-back. Nia DaCosta, the director of Candyman is expected to direct the second of the three. Boyle will write the first, from a Garland script.
Boyle and Garland will both produce, as will original producers, Andrew Macdonald and Peter Rice. They’ll be joined by Bernie Bellew.
Cillian Murphy will be an executive producer.
The films are being slated for a cinematic, rather than streaming release.
