Police have launched an investigation after social media footage emerged following an alleged assault on Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane.

The Manchester United legend was reportedly headbutted by an angry Gunners fan at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium while on his way to carrying out the full-time analysis of the weekend’s clash between the London side and his former team at the weekend.

Sky confirmed that fellow pundit Micah Richards attempted to “defuse” the situation at the Emirates Stadium following Arsenal’s 3-1 victory. The Metropolitan police said there had been no arrests but there is now an investigation into an alleged assault after the game on Sunday.

Sky said the alleged assault “immediately” preceded the footage on social media. “We understand the police are investigating an alleged assault by a member of the public immediately preceding the footage circulating on social media,” said a Sky Sports spokesperson. “In the footage seen, Micah Richards was acting to defuse a situation.”

“Police are investigating following an assault that is alleged to have occurred at the Emirates Stadium during an Arsenal v Manchester United match on Sunday, 3 September,” a Metropolitan police statement said. “There have been no arrests. Inquiries are ongoing. Any witnesses or those with information are asked to call 101 ref CAD 6961/3 Sept.”

Update: At 3.28pm on Monday September 4 TalkSport reported that police had made an arrest over the incident. A police statement said: “On Monday, 4 September, a 42-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault [ABH]. The man has been taken into police custody. Enquiries are ongoing.”
