BBC Radio Merseyside is honouring Ukraine with a series of specially produced jingles in Ukrainian as part of a project called “BBC Radio Merseyside’s Sound of Eurovision.”
Irena Taranyuk from the BBC Ukrainian Service has voiced the special “station sound” that will run across BBC Radio Merseyside from Tuesday, May 9 to Saturday, May 13, while the Eurovision Song Contest takes place in Liverpool.
Marta Shokalo, editor for the BBC Ukrainian Service said: “The whole Eurovision experience in Liverpool is about seeing and hearing Ukraine. We are very proud that we’ve made our own little contribution to it via the beautiful voice of our Irena Taranyuk. She has been listened to by thousands or people in Ukraine and now thousands of British people and the guests of this event will hear this strong and beautiful Ukrainian voice.”
BBC Radio Merseyside’s executive editor Andrew Bowman added: “Sam Ryder said this is Ukraine’s party and we’re hosting it in our house – and these special jingles really embody that spirit. We’re honoured in Liverpool to be the Host City on behalf of Ukraine. Eurovision is an amazing celebration but this year is also poignant because of the war.”
BBC Radio Merseyside is covering the contest in-depth. including providing an alternative ‘Scouse’ commentary for the Grand Final. The Jingles were produced by BBC Radio Merseyside audio producer, Gemma Maull, who said: “Working with Irena and the team from the BBC Ukrainian Service was both inspirational and emotional. Irena spoke to us about the everyday challenges of reporting a war in her home country. I really hope these resonate with our listeners.”
