Reach Plc has revealed the identities of the senior editors at its yet-to-launch US versions of The Express and The Mirror.
Heading up the Express’s US debut will be former Bolton News editor and Northern Echo group editor Karl Holbrook. The new Express US editor’s most recent UK role saw him serving as executive editor at the UK version of the Express.
Over at the Mirror’s US imprint, Alex Wellman will be taking on the editor’s role. Wellman may be less well known to the Northern industry as the bulk of his career has been served in and around London, including stints at the Hackney Gazette and Kilburn Times. Wellman is currently Reach’s deputy group head of showbiz across the publisher’s national titles.
Reach will also be launching its Irish flagship The Irish Times stateside alongside the UK titles, with experienced Irish journo Ryan Smith stepping into the editor’s shoes there.
Announcing the news on LinkedIn, Holbrook said: “Thrilled to announce that I’m heading Stateside to launch Express Newspapers in the Big Apple! I’ve been appointed Editor of Express US helping lead our expansion in America…We’re hard at work putting together a great launch team, here and in New York, where we’ll be based in the next couple of months.”
Holbrook added that, despite the US Express having not yet “properly” launched it’s already picking up millions of weekly page views. He also noted that there are plenty of jobs to be filled at the upcoming US Express, so if you’re in New York, or fancy heading there for work, and have an encyclopaedic knowledge of the life and works of Princess Diana, head on over to Reach’s recruitment pages.
