Hygiene and health company Essity, which has its UK HQ at Manchester Airport, has been recognized as one of the world’s 100 most sustainable companies.

The latest listing was announced at the World Economic Forum in Davos today by Corporate Knights, a publishing and research firm that publishes focused on sustainability and responsible business

The Global 100 list represents the top one per cent of companies in the world in terms of sustainability performance. Corporate Knights analyzes and compares 6,720 publicly traded companies with a minimum gross revenue of USD 1bn against global industry peers. The ranking is based on 25 quantitative key performance indicators, including sustainable revenue, sustainable investment, taxes paid, carbon productivity, and racial and gender diversity.

Magnus Groth, President and CEO of Essity, said: “We are proud to once again be ranked as one of the world’s most sustainable companies. As a global company providing hygiene and health solutions to over a billion people every day, Essity makes a real impact when it comes to people and the environment. Our inclusion in Corporate Knight’s index demonstrates our commitment to responsible business practices throughout our value chain.”

The news comes as construction work commences on Essity’s new, £30m wastepaper recycling plant in Northumberland. The new plant will replace its former unifibres plant and enable Essity to recycle lower-grade paper and board, enhance its ability to segregate plastic and metal contaminants, reduce waste sent to landfill and improve energy efficiency.

Essity is the parent company of brands including Cushelle and Velvet bathroom tissue and Bodyform and Tena feminine hygiene products.

UK companies of note to make the list included communications giant BT Group, London-headquartered multinational Unilever and Covid vaccine frontrunner Astra Zeneca.
