Sony showcases Manchester City metaverse at CES 2023

Sony has revealed its “next generation” fan experiences concept at the CES 2023 Show in Las Vegas.

First announced two years ago, Sony has been working with Manchester City on a proof of concept online fan community, using a virtual version of the Etihad as the centre of a the supporters’ metaverse.

Sony said it is seeking to link virtual and physical worlds through the experience and has been showcasing the content at its CES booth.

It explained that fans could: “express their feelings and passion for the team by creating their own customisable avatars on their smartphones and, in the future, connect with millions of fans across the globe, in addition to accessing various services to increase engagement.”

Nuria Tarre, Chief Marketing Officer, City Football Group said the lines between sports, tech and entertainment “were getting blurred” and that the new tech would should what fans wanted from clubs’ in the future.

The prototype includes match highlights, using avatars, so that fans can experience key moments from the players’ perspective in the metaverse.
