Wagatha Christie battle takes to the skies

Channel 4 has launched the marketing campaign for the much-anticipated ‘Wagatha Christie’ TV drama, Vardy v Rooney: A Courtroom Drama.

The two-parter is a dramatisation of the 2022 High Court battle between Coleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy. Created from real court transcripts, the film will bring viewers all of the incredible moments from a high-profile case that kept the public and media gripped.

The campaign took to the skies over North West football hotspots Old Trafford and Goodison Park, as well as WAG-central, Knutsford in Cheshire’s “Golden Triangle,” yesterday with a series of dramatic flyovers. The first plane trailed a banner reading “It’s……….” while on the second the sentence was completed with “…Vardy v Rooney.”

The stunt recalls how “It’s……….” entered into footballers’ wives folklore after Rooney suspected her personal stories were being leaked by Vardy, announcing her theory on social media with the memorable statement “It’s………Rebekah Vardy’s account.”

With the aerial adventures now complete, the campaign continues on the ground. Out-of-home posters reading “It’s……….” are live now, and will be supplemented with posters reading “Vardy v Rooney: A Courtroom Drama” from December 8 onwards.

From the December 12, animated posters anchored around the simple phrase will go live across Channel 4’s Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat accounts.

Produced by Channel 4’s in-house agency 4creative and planned by OMD UK, the campaign throws back to the iconic moment Coleen Rooney used social media to announce to the world who was leaking her stories.

Lynsey Atkin, executive creative director at 4creative, said: “It’s not often we get asked to bring to life one of the internet’s most iconic moments, so we really couldn’t help ourselves running with the greatest drum-roll of the year. Then someone mentioned a plane and a 60ft banner and we couldn’t help ourselves then either. So much so we ordered two. Giving Vardy v Rooney: A Courtroom Drama the kind of theatrics it deserves has been a huge amount of fun, whilst hopefully giving those hooked on the case even more reason to tune into this most famous feud.”

Vardy v Rooney: A Courtroom Drama is produced by Chalkboard and will air Channel 4 on December 21 and 22 at 9pm.
