Eurovision 2023 has appointed Gail Sullivan as head of communications for the world’s most-loved, and watched, celebration of pop music.

Sullivan has worked for Eurovision host broadcaster, the BBC, at MediaCityUK since 2013, most recently as communications manager for BBC Sport, BBC Children’s, BBC Learning and BBC Breakfast.

Sullivan announced the news on LinkedIn saying: “I’ve just started a new position as Head of Communications, Eurovision Song Contest 2023 at BBC!” The message was accompanied by a suitably smiley sunshine face emoji.

Next year’s parade of pop will be held in Liverpool after it was decided that this year’s winners, Ukraine, would be unable to host the event due to the ongoing war with Russia. The UK had placed second in the 2022 event with Sam Ryder’s Spaceman.

Liverpool was one of 20 UK cities to originally express an interest in hosting the event, with Northern rivals Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield and Newcastle all submitting bids.

The West coast city eventually made it down to a final two run-off against Scottish rival Glasgow, with the winner announced by Graham Norton on the BBC’s One Show at the beginning of October.

The event finals, the 67th Eurovision competition, will take place at the Liverpool Arena from May 9, 2023, with the grand final taking place on May 13.
