Production company Made in Manchester has produced radio features on some of the LGBTQ+ athletes taking part in this year’s Olympics in Tokyo.
The features, supported by Audio Content Fund, will be broadcast on Manchester-based radio station Gaydio in the run up to the start of the games.
The unique profiles will chart both the athletes’ sporting journey to Tokyo and their personal LGBTQ+ stories.
Creative Director of MIM Ashley Byrne said: “It’s been a tough time for the athletes having to delay their appearances at the Games due to the Covid pandemic. All these Olympians and Paralympians have unique stories to tell about their journeys to Tokyo but also about their LGBT journeys too. Some found it easy to come out, others struggled to be accepted. Several found love through sport. They’re great stories which we hope will inspire listeners.”
Gaydio Content Manager Kriss Herbert added: “We’re looking forward to hearing these LGBTQ+ voices on Gaydio, at a time when representation in sport is so important given some of the backward steps certain countries are making towards LGBTQ+ rights. At Gaydio we love hearing from people within our community and hope that these stories will inspire others.”
The features can be heard over the next 2 weeks.
