The newly rebranded R&A World Golf Museum has opened its doors, following a redesign by Cheshire-based Mather & Co.
Based in St Andrews, the exhibition features more than 16k items telling the story of the sport’s invention in Scotland in the 15th century to its growth today.
Mather & Co was responsible for several key areas of the re-design, including the development of storylines and themes, the 3D design of the exhibition, AV experiences and graphic design.
“It has been a brilliant opportunity to work with a governing sport body, and together we have created a museum which is accessible to both golf lovers and new fans to celebrate the past, present and future of golf,” said Leanne Clydesdale, Project Interpretation Designer at Mather & Co.
“I never thought I would know so much about the sport, but I have really enjoyed learning about it and now I am interested in giving golf a go myself!”
Angela Howe, Director of Museum & Heritage at The R&A added:
“Our goal when developing The R&A World Golf Museum was to re-imagine the golf heritage experience; making it appealing to established golf fans whilst attracting and educating those new to the sport.
“The refurbishment of the galleries provides a modern back drop for people to learn about golf’s heritage via immersive, interactive and interesting exhibits.”
Visitors can view the oldest golf clubs in the world, learn to play golf with major champion Catriona Matthew, have a go at putting under pressure in a new digital experience and become immersed in the heritage of The Open in a new state-of-the-art projection show.
