A Week in My Life: Charlotte Fenney, Agency Director, Waterfall

Charlotte Fenney, Waterfall

Waterfall is an award-winning creative agency with a specialism in education marketing.

Crowned Best Small Agency at this year’s Prolific North Marketing Awards, the agency works with a range of education clients, such as UCAS, Universities UK International, Nottingham Trent University, Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester.

Appointed as Agency Director in May 2021, Charlotte Fenney previously worked as Client Partner at Havas People. At Waterfall, which is based at MediaCity, she is responsible for building relationships with Waterfall’s client base and help them find new ways to stand out.

She shared how a recent week in her life went…

Monday

I began my week dropping off my two children at breakfast club and then made the short drive to MediaCity in Manchester. Our office is in the heart of MediaCity, home to the BBC, ITV and a buzzing community of creative and digital businesses. From my desk I can look across the water straight onto the iconic set of Coronation Street, a fave of mine!

We start our week as a team with our daily stand-up meeting, taking 15 minutes to focus on the priorities of the day. My role is a combination of leading the day-to-day agency operations, as well as directing projects, so there’s lots of variety. Today this included a project meeting with one of our clients to plan a nine-episode video podcast series all about degree apprenticeships, followed by a pre-production meeting for a brand film we’re creating for an Art and Design School.

There’s much excitement in the agency, as it’s the first England World Cup game today, so we kept one eye on the game on the big screen in our office. We’ve got a fun sweepstake set up for Waterfallers and family members, with half the winnings being donated to an LGBTQ+ charity and the rest going to the winning team. Come on Canada!!

Tuesday

I really value the supportive Waterfall culture and on Tuesdays and Thursdays I work a half day so I can spend a bit more time with my children. After the morning school run, I head into Manchester City Centre to the UCAS Create Your Future event.

We’re really proud to partner with UCAS for all sorts of marketing initiatives and after having a great hour looking round the event and catching up with familiar faces from across the sector, myself and the senior team spent some time with our UCAS colleagues discussing future projects. Then it’s back home for me and an evening of rainbows and football training!

Wednesday

After today’s team stand-up, I catch up with our junior creative team about our festive social media content, coming to a channel near you soon! This year it’s all about 12 days of giving. I then join one of our project managers for a couple of brilliant calls, briefing panellists for our forthcoming video podcast recordings – sharing our episode guides with them and hearing their expert views on the topics we’ll be exploring in each episode.

We’re joined by a colleague from our very talented neighbours, Audio Always, who we’re collaborating with as part of the project. After a quick dash to Greggs (those chicken bites!), I meet with one of our Creative Directors and Client Managers to prepare for a pitch interview we’ve been invited to on Monday. We love meeting new clients and introducing them to the Waterfall way of creating meaningful communications.

Thursday

After today’s school run, I spend the morning working from home. A highlight was meeting with one of our long-standing university clients to discuss the response to a casting call. We’re looking for participants to feature in a brand film we’re shooting in the new year. The response has been incredible, with so many talented students and alumni to select from, a great problem to have.

I lead our weekly resource planning meeting on a Thursday, anticipating priorities for the next week and mapping out how we’ll deliver our pipeline of work. It’s then off to swimming classes after school, our Thursday ritual! When we get home, I dial into a trustee meeting for Manchester Central Foodbank. I’ve enjoyed being a Trustee since 2018, it’s a small way for me to play a part in fighting poverty in Manchester. Sadly, never has the demand been so great for our service, and we’ve a productive meeting about how best to support our clients over the coming winter months.

Friday

As I walk into our building I can see Christmas has arrived and there’s a lovely sparkly tree in our communal hub area. After our stand-up meeting we have a pre-production client meeting to discuss the forthcoming recording of our podcast series – we tackle studio dressing, camera angles, green rooms, mic muffs and more, all very exciting. We walk through a couple more panellist briefing sessions and then I head over to our ops team meeting in The Hub of the Tomorrow building next door.

MediaCity is our very own campus, there are so many inspiring spaces to work from. It’s a packed ops agenda as ever and we have a great session talking through plans for our new website and an exciting collaboration with Future Index in 2023.

We’re in award entry season so I’m busy collating content for submissions for some of our work of the year. The last awards we entered saw us recognised as Prolific North’s Best Small Marketing Agency of the Year. I’m so proud to lead team Waterfall, it’s such a special agency to be part of.
