How to build your team as a tech start-up

The tech scene in the North is booming, as huge companies such as AutoTrader, Peak, Channel 4 and Mediacom flock to areas such as Manchester and Leeds to take advantage of competitive costs and world-class talent, writes Natalie Metcalf, Marketing Manager at The Candidate.

However, it’s also important to consider how smaller businesses and start-ups in the region can compete when attracting talent and growing their teams.

Having recently sponsored Prolific North’s ‘Tech 25 Ones to Watch’ List, we have put together some advice for start-ups looking to expand their team. Whether it’s creating a great working culture, providing competitive benefits, or setting out a strong vision for your business, it’s so important to focus on attracting the best talent possible right from the beginning of your start-ups journey.

Plan your tech team recruitment strategy

It’s important to plan how you’re going to scale up your business and grow your team effectively. Having a long-term vision is vital – hiring senior leaders to help shape the culture and vision of the business will be hugely beneficial. This isn’t the time or place to compromise or cut costs – invest in these first key hires.

Create a strong working culture

Make sure your candidates have a great experience working for you. Focus on your employer branding and internal communications as well as your external advertising – it’s just as important! Give potential hires a genuine insight into what it’s like to work for your business, utilising channels such as social media, as well as being transparent in the hiring process when it comes to timelines and procedures.

Offer flexibility and benefits

We understand that competing with the benefits that the ‘tech giants’ can offer may be impossible as a start-up, but there are some key points to note when it comes to attracting the top talent. In a ‘post-covid’ world, flexible, hybrid, or remote working is a given in the tech industry, with many candidates we see insisting on these types of arrangements.

Also, ensure there are plenty of opportunities for your staff to upskill and continue their learning – this benefits their careers, and your business!

Champion your vision

Make sure you set out a clear vision and mission statement for your business from the offset. This helps staff buy into your brand and increases their commitment. It also helps negate some of the risk candidates may encounter when choosing to join your start-up compared to a larger more established business, as they will feel enthusiastic and aligned with your mission.
