A mini-estate of affordable homes is set to be built in north Manchester as part of a Channel 4 series celebrating 100 years of council housing.
Manchester City Council has announced the plans for up to 75 “well designed, high quality” affordable homes adjacent to the town hall in Newton Heath, north Manchester.
Amazing Spaces presenter George Clarke will come on board to offer his advice on the designs. The project, which would see the homes built at the site of a former cotton mill on Silk Street, was first announced in November but now details have been revealed and it has just gone out to public consultation.
The designs have been drawn up by Manchester-based Six Two architects, with plans for 21 family homes and up to 54 one and two bedroom apartments alongside the canal.
Clarke attended the first consultation event at Newton Heath library to meet local people and hear their thoughts on new housing design and construction.
Councillor Suzanne Richards, the town hall’s executive member for housing and regeneration, said: “We are committed to ensuring that Manchester residents have access to high quality, well-designed, affordable housing and are keen to explore the latest techniques that can help deliver that ambition as quickly as possible.
“Local communities are at the heart of this and it is important we consult widely to hear people’s views and deliver the very best for everyone.”
