The Manchester Evening News has discontinued its Oldham edition less than a year after it was launched.
Trinity Mirror (now Reach PLC) launched the edition last September following the closure of of the daily Oldham Chronicle.
At the time, MEN Editor-in-Chief Rob Irvine said: “It was a sad day for the town when the Chronicle ceased publication after 163 years. But the town still retains a daily newspaper with the Manchester Evening News being a long-standing favourite.
“It is clear from the number of additional readers coming to us in recent days that there is strong desire for a daily mixture of local, regional and national news and sport.”
Now new MEN Editor-in-Chief Darren Thwaites told Hold The Front Page: “We’ve adjusted our production schedule to accommodate our Oldham content in the main edition of the Manchester Evening News.
“We’ll continue to have a reporter with responsibility for the Oldham area and we’ll continue to cover important stories in the same way, both online and in print.”
Newsquest also launched the weekly Oldham Times and Quest Media the Oldham Reporter, which both continue to be published.
The Chronicle ceased publication on August 31st last year with the loss of 49 jobs after its parent company Hirst, Kidde and Rennie went into administration. It has since been revived as a digital-only operation after being purchased by Credible Media.
