Channel 4 has announced a new slate of documentaries including going behind the scenes at Durham prison and a look at foreign doctors coming to Britain.

The Foreign Doctors are Coming is produced by Blakeway North and was filmed over 11 months.

It follows 4 doctors, from India, Brazil and Egypt, as they take the exams required to prove they are up to the standard required by the health service.

While the prospect of working in the NHS could transform their lives, it comes at a risk – they have to spend thousands on travel, accommodation, the course and the test, plus they leave their family behind.

It has been produced and directed by Andrew Dedman, the executive producer is Sarah Murch.

Channel 4 has also commissioned a new series from Spring Films, which goes behind the scenes at Durham Prison.

Filmed over 6 months, it focuses on one of the country’s oldest and busiest prisons.

With a capacity of just over 1000, new prisoners arrive daily with complex medical, emotional and health needs, all of which need to be assessed and catered for. With every cell and every bed occupied, every day prison officers are fighting a war against drugs and smuggled mobile phones.

It’s been produced and directed by Paddy Wivell (Extremely British Muslims, The Tribe and Bedlam).
