Leeds-based Numiko has created the website for Bradford’s newly renamed National Science + Media Museum.

Part of the Science Museum Group, it’s the first of 4 redesigns, with London’s Science Museum, Manchester’s MOSI and the National Railway Museum in York to follow.

The Bradford museum was rebranded to reflect a “new focus on the science behind the magic of photography, film and television.”

“The Science Museum Group is a global institution, with each one of its museums being a leader in their field. With the dawn of the web, overnight museums had the prospect of becoming much more than physical spaces and collections of objects.  Technology has created the opportunity for anyone in the world with an internet connection to be inspired through this huge collection of knowledge, narratives and insight into humanity’s ingenuity and achievements,” explained Dave Eccles of Numiko.

“We’ve brought together a unified technology approach across all four sites, a contemporary user experience and powerful editorial capabilities through the latest Drupal 8 CMS. Together we’re playing a critical part in the next chapter of the Science Museum’s mission; to deliver a digital experience that is on a par with the physical experience of this amazing attraction.”

The websites include more imagery and educational content, to showcase hidden treasures and tell the stories behind some of the objects housed at the museum.

Numiko has designed the sites so that they have a shared architecture and visual language.

“Over 2017, the Science Museum Group will relaunch its entire web estate across four museums.  The existing websites display all the features of an end-of-life online web estate: dated design, poor content discovery, limited accessibility and mobile support, and unsustainable underlying technology.

We decided to address all of these issues (and more) in one go through a comprehensive overhaul over a year or so,” said John Stack, head of digital for Science Museum Group.

“We have a small in-house team and were keen to collaborate with a partner like Numiko who could work with us across all aspects of the project: requirements gathering, technical infrastructure, design, user experience, testing and post-launch enhancement.”
