Manchester United has been named as the world’s richest club, breaking Real Madrid’s 11 year dominance.
Deloitte’s annual Money League lists the top 20 clubs according to their revenue.
These latest figures related to the season 2015/16, when United earned a record income of £515.3m. This reflected strong growth across matchday, broadcast and commercial revenue.
Real Madrid were pushed into 3 place, with Barcelona remaining second in the list.
Manchester City climbed to 5th, while Liverpool stayed at 9th.
Looking at all 20 clubs in the league, their combined revenue rose by 12% to £5.5bn – a new record.
However, Dan Jones, partner at Deloitte doesn’t believe the record will stand for very long:
“We expect this record year, driven by increased broadcast and commercial revenues, to be eclipsed next year. New domestic broadcast deals starting in 2016/17 for Premier League and La Liga clubs (as well as international broadcast deals for the Premier League), mean the 21st edition will see the €8 billion barrier broken.”
He added that the weakened pound following Brexit will ensure a close fight between Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United for next year’s top spot.
