Countdown has made it into the Guinness World Record books as it airs its 6000th episode today.
The award for the “most series broadcast for a TV game show” will be given to current presenters, Nick Hewer, Rachel Riley and Susie Dent.
Countdown started its life 32 years ago at Yorkshire Television. It was fronted by the late Richard Whiteley for more than 20 years, alongside Carol Vorderman, who was on the show for 26 years.
Now in its 70th series, it’s still made by ITV Studios for Channel 4, but moved across the Pennines to MediaCityUK. In recent years it’s also received its very own Channel 4 spin-off, with 8 Out Of 10 Cats giving it a comedy twist.
“The show – the first ever shown on Channel 4 – has long been a cornerstone of British popular culture, and its 70 series attest to its class, quality and pure entertainment value,” said Craig Glenday, editor-in-chief at Guinness World Records.
“It’s every bit a part of TV time as the cuppa itself, and I’m looking forward to its next 6,000 episodes.”
