Supermarket giant Morrisons has announced sweeping closures of in-store services across the UK, putting around 365 jobs at risk – with several northern locations among the hardest hit.
The cuts include 52 cafés, all 18 Market Kitchen food-to-go counters, 17 convenience stores, 13 florists, 35 meat and fish counters, and four pharmacies. While some staff may be redeployed, the move signals a significant shake-up for workers, particularly in Yorkshire, the North East, and Scotland.
Bradford-based Morrisons blamed the closures on services where “costs are significantly out of line with customer demand.” Despite shutting more than 50 cafés, the company insisted the format remains viable in most areas.

- Bradford, Thornbury
- Newcastle, Great Park
- Leeds, Swinnow Road
- Leeds, Horsforth
- Blackburn, Railway Road
- Failsworth, Poplar Street
- Newcastle Upon Tyne, Cowgate
- Halifax, Elland
- Kirkham, Poulton Street (Lancashire)
- Bellshill, John Street (Scotland)
- Dumbarton, Glasgow Road (Scotland)
- East Kilbride, Lindsayfield (Scotland)
- East Kilbride, Stewartfield (Scotland)

Northern convenience stores shutting:

- Whickham, Oakfield Road (Gateshead)
The cuts extend nationwide, including cafés in London, the South East, and Wales. Morrisons CEO Rami Baitieh said some locations had “specific local challenges,” leaving closure as the only option. In some cases, the retailer may bring in third-party operators to fill the gap.
The Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (USDAW) vowed to support affected staff. Darren Matthews, USDAW National Officer, said:
“Our priority is to keep as many people in jobs as possible. While we’re relieved that many workers may be redeployed, we’re pressing Morrisons to justify these cuts and minimise job losses—especially in communities where these stores are vital.”
The closures are expected to roll out over the coming months, leaving workers in the North and beyond facing an uncertain future.
