Susanna Reid bows out with ‘newsreader of the year’ award

reid2Susanna Reid has been named newsreader of the year at the Television and Radio Industries Club (TRIC) awards just after announcing her departure from BBC Breakfast at MediaCityUK.

She beat the BBC’s Fiona Bruce and Daybreak’s Lorraine Kelly to the gong.

Other winners included Gabby Logan, the presenter and Leeds Trinity university chancellor, who was named best sports presenter.

And Coronation Street was crowned best soap over EastEnders and Emmerdale.

Reid is moving to ITV to launch new show Good Morning Britain. She thanked her former BBC Breakfast colleagues in her first public appearance since announcing her move to ITV. Reid told a BBC reporter she left the BBC after receiving an offer that was too good to refuse.

“They offered me a great opportunity and, as a news journalist and a presenter, it’s absolutely amazing to be given the opportunity to create a new programme.”

Asked if she worried whether Good Morning Britain would be a success, she replied: “You can’t worry about how it’s going to work. You have to aim to do the best you absolutely can do.

Other awards at the ceremony went to:
– Channel 4’s Gogglebox. Named best entertainment show over Mrs Brown’s Boys and The Graham Norton Show.
– Doctor Who beat period dramas Downton Abbey and Call the Midwife to win best drama.
Ant and Dec were named best TV personalities.
ITV hit Broadchurch won best crime programme.
