The culture website Northern Soul has branched out and launched a weekly podcast.

The 40 minute show includes interviews with major bands and musical artists, as well as showcasing up-and-coming talent. Interviewees range from musicians playing in the North of England to local names. Other major interviews will include a host of well-known Northern names, from artistic directors across the cultural landscape to celebrity chefs and authors.

Founded and edited by former Times journalist Helen Nugent, Northern Soul is a group-written website focusing on Northern happenings, attractions, music and cultural events. The new podcast, broadcast every Sunday evening at 7pm, is produced and presented by broadcast journalist Lucy McNamara.

In the inaugural podcast – which is available for download here http://www.northernsoul.me.uk/the-northern-soul-podcast – Lucy talked to Mercury Music Prize-nominated Kathryn Williams and the Inspiral Carpets’ Clint Boon.

Williams was born in Liverpool and now lives in Newcastle. Her new album, Crown Electric, is the name of the power company that employed the young Elvis Presley as a delivery truck driver. Boon joined the Inspiral Carpets in 1986. Today he combines his work with the Inspirals with presenting a daily show on XFM and DJ-ing.

Lucy reads the news for BBC Radio Stoke. Her extensive CV includes BBC local radio and stations such as Capital, Heart, LBC and XFM. She has also worked for BBC Breakfast in Salford. Over the years, Lucy has covered various UK festivals, including Latitude and the Ramsbottom Festival, where she has interviewed the likes of Vampire Weekend, Temper Trap and Parlour Flames.

Since launch in May 2013, Northern Soul has grown to a team of 27 and includes professional journalists, playwrights, multimedia specialists, photographers and bloggers.

Regular contributors include The Guardian’s former Northern Correspondent Helen Carter and a number of other successful writers whose combined CV includes the BBC, the Manchester Evening News, The Mail on Sunday, the Yorkshire Post and The Big Issue in the North.
